888 Fined $10 Million

There is never any excuse for an online casino site to fail to help problem gamblers.

888 is one of the world’s largest and most frequented online casinos. Players from Canada and all over the world flock there in order to take advantage of the amazing promotions, huge selection of games, and world-class software:

However, with great power comes great responsibility to protect players who might have a gambling problem. British regulators recently found that 888 was not doing all that it could or should to meet that responsibility, and have slapped the online gaming giant with a record-setting $10m fine as a result.

Duty to Protect Vulnerable Customers

Online casino gaming is supposed to a fun and safe environment, and there is never any excuse for an online casino site to fail to help problem gamblers. There is no room in it for predatory companies taking advantage of those that need the most protection.

The UK Gambling Commission’s chief executive Sarah Harrison drove this point home in announcing that the decision to level a record setting penally against 888 came in the wake of “the seriousness of 888’s failings to protect vulnerable customers.

She emphasized that the sum was absolutely intended to send a message that a failure to protect players will not be tolerated:

“The 888 sanction package will ensure those affected don’t lose out, that the operator pays the price for its failings via a sum that will go to tackling gambling-related harm, and that independent assurance will be given to see that lessons are learnt,” she said.

888 Responds

To its credit, 888 did not contest the fine. Instead, it released a statement that seems to indicate the company has gotten the message and will do more in the future to take its responsibilities towards vulnerable and problem gamblers seriously:

“{888] accepts the Conclusion of the review and is committed to providing players with a responsible as well as enjoyable gaming experience.”

While it’s disappointing to see such a well-known and respected brand behave this way, the hope is that the company will learn its lesson and do better in the future. Anything less will be unacceptable, and hopefully met with an even stiffer penalty.
