Authorities Press Pause on Kingsway Entertainment Development
The Greater Sudbury area has been preparing itself for the controversial Kingsway entertainment development project for several months now. However, it seems like there are a lot of obstacles that may well end up delaying the project’s completion by several years. In fact, it is expected that the project will be pushed back to 2021 or 2022. There are several factors that could well contribute to this delay, and one of the biggest is the fact that there is a lot of opposition to the project. David Shelsted, project director, claimed that the delays were as a result of the appeals lodged with the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal. “There’s a set time period to construct the building. So if we don’t get approvals for the LPAT process in a timely nature we can’t get a building permit for the [events centre] and that would then push the schedule further back,” he stated. It seems that there has been a lot of vociferous opposition to the project happening, and this is no doubt what has led to the project being put on hold. Gateway Casinos, who are one of the partners in the project, have been looking forward to expanding their empire as much as possible. Back in December Gateway Casinos expressed doubts about whether they would follow through on plans for this project. However, it seems that things continued in an upward trend, and this setback is surely not going to dissuade the Casino giants from pushing through with the project. The legal fight that is delaying the Kingsway development is expected to run for another few years yet, and both sides will know they need to tread carefully in order to get the result they want. There is no doubt that the new casino is going to bring massive benefits to Greater Sudbury, and the Ontario area as a whole. This is something that many supporting the project are at pains to make clear. However, there was staunch opposition even back in September 2018, when the controversial Kingsway project began to gain more traction. The project was focused on developing a casino and entertainment centre focusing on sports, gambling, and entertainment. But, there have been criticisms aimed at the project, such as the city spending so much money on a project that may not work out. It does seem unlikely that a project spearheaded by Gateway would not become an unmitigated success. Indeed, the company has enjoyed so much success that Gateway recently filed for an IPO on the New York Stock Exchange. The future is bright for this company, and this could prove good news for cities like Greater Sudbury, particularly in the future.
