B.C. Moves to Protect Staff from Future Harassment Allegations

News broke a couple of years back surrounding the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation owned establishment River Rock. According to reports, the Richmond-based casino has faced several controversial incidents in the past. One of the main ones was a story that broke surrounding allegations of harassment of staff of River Rock Casino

As a result of this problem, the B.C. government has actually moved to protect staff from the possibility of future harassment when they are at work. In fact, there have been disturbing suggestions that staff were instructed to turn a blind eye to harassment, violence, and possible sexual assault. This is something that presents uncomfortable questions that need to be answered, and there are lot of factors that need to be considered when it comes to this.

Several staff, back in 2017, made allegations that they had suffered from assaults by patrons. This is something that could well be a regular occurance for a lot of staff in casino establishments, but the fact that they were asked to keep quiet about it should be a cause for concern. This is something that nobody should have to be dealing with, especially when they work in the hospitality and customer service fields.

It could well be the case that the customers who committed these alleged assaults were high-rollers, and casino bosses were counting on their money. If this is true then that presents even more problems, and changes will certainly need to be made to the way casinos are run in British Columbia as a result.

Paladin Security ran a workplace review and investigated the alleged incidents at River Rock. It was discovered that River Rock bosses had also asked staff to sign non-disclosure agreements so that they could not talk about any harassment they might have faced. Although it seems that a more recent report cleared River Rock of any wrongdoing in this capacity, but deemed that the establishment could (and should) have done more to protect its staff.

It is clear that there are a lot of potential criminal goings on in many casinos across B.C., and things need to be done to assess this problem. This is why River Rock Casino needs to be independently investigated and assessed in order to clean up the goings on in the business.

Reports unveiled countless instances of abuse and harassment, including things like throwing furniture, physically assaulting staff members, and potential sexual harassment as well. There is likely to be further investigations into these allegations, and the casino could find itself facing stricter regulations when it comes to improving the way they do things.

The Gaming Control Act requires employers to report instances of abuse like this, and these River Rock incidents could well lead to changes in laws about what casinos are required to do, and the punishments they could face for failing to comply with these regulations.
