Canada Gambling Could Go Global as Pharma Co Moves for Greek Casino
This casino and hotel resort project will be a high-end development in an idyllic location, and will be a key part of our global expansion plan
We all know how much the casino and gambling industries in Canada have seen a lot of growth in the past few years. This has been exemplified by provincial growth and the number of new projects that have been in development recently. But, there have not been many significant developments on a global scale that have really had a positive impact on the industry in Canada.
There have been a couple of instances of Canadian gambling stretching its feelers somewhere other than across Canada. For example, we had news in September that OLG (Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation) had partnered with a UK-based gaming and software company. This signified a big and important step into the European gaming market for Ontario, and for Canada as a whole.
News also broke of other developments with the impact of Canadian gambling in other countries as well. Indeed, BCLC’s responsible gambling initiative GameSense has actually been adopted by casinos across the United States as well. While not something that will directly impact the Canadian gambling industry, this is still an important move for putting the Great White North on the map in terms of their impact on the casino world.
Well, news broke this week that Canada could begin flexing its muscles in the European gambling market. This is an unusual story though because it’s not a casino development abroad, nor is it a link between two gaming or casino companies. Oh no. In this instance, we are talking about Canadian pharmaceutical company Easton Pharmaceuticals Inc. exploring the idea of developing a Greek-based casino!
This is an unprecedented move by the company, and they have written a letter of intent to be added to a shortlist of bidders for Casino Loutraki. Now, whether this is the company trying to enhance its profile abroad, or if they are interested in becoming involved in the casino market, remains to be seen.
Loutraki is thought to be one of nine planned casino developments happening in Greece, and it offers more than 255 hotel rooms, over 1,000 slots games, and close to 90 gaming tables. It is a big project that is bound to bring in many millions of Euros for the lucky owners. It is also located just 80 km from the Greek capital of Athens, making it an ideal tourist hotspot.
Easton CEO Evan Karras is well familiarised with gaming operations across Greece, as he worked to privatise gambling in the Southern European country back in the 1990s. He is quoted as saying, “This casino and hotel resort project will be a high-end development in an idyllic location, and will be a key part of our global expansion plan.”
This mystery project has attracted keen interest from Easton, and a number of other potential suitors as well. There is no doubting that the move would have a hugely positive impact for Easton Pharmaceuticals, but it might well also have significant results for the casino industry across Canada as well. The exposure Easton will receive from the project will do a lot to boost interest in Canada, and there will likely be opportunities for links and partnerships with Canadian-based casinos and suppliers in the future as well.
