Unfortunately, the same is not true north of the border, and Canadians are still, frustratingly, being made to wait for their chance to indulge in sports betting. Because the Canadian industry has yet to be legalised, this has led to these services in the US posing a threat. The amount of cash this is bringing in for the US is going to be staggering. And, from Canada’s perspective, the nation could even find Canadians going across the border to be able to partake in sports betting in the States, thus taking money away from Canadian gambling.
It seems that Canada is being left behind on this front, largely as a result of its outdated policies regarding sports betting. In fact, there have been claims among politicians and union leaders, that Canada’s sports betting laws are ‘mind-boggling,’ and need to be changed. A push is being made to legalise single-game sports betting as soon as possible. David Cassidy, who is president of Unifor Local 444 claimed, “We’re going to be doing lobbying efforts. It’s going to be front and centre because we have a lot of members in the hospitality sector that it negatively affects.”
Cassidy does seem to have a point, and Canada’s current ban on sports betting feels a little like cutting off its nose to spite its face. Union leaders are spearheading the movement to try to expand sports betting in the area, and this is something that plays a big part in the process of developing and expanding the industry in the best possible way.
