Canada Missing Out Over US Sports Betting

This year marked an historic development for the world of sports betting, as the US Supreme Court passed legislation to legalise sports betting services across the country. This marked a change to the old ways, and embraced the future of the world of gambling. This marked a big change in the way gamblers were able to enjoy sports in the US, and is seeing the industry flourish.

Unfortunately, the same is not true north of the border, and Canadians are still, frustratingly, being made to wait for their chance to indulge in sports betting. Because the Canadian industry has yet to be legalised, this has led to these services in the US posing a threat. The amount of cash this is bringing in for the US is going to be staggering. And, from Canada’s perspective, the nation could even find Canadians going across the border to be able to partake in sports betting in the States, thus taking money away from Canadian gambling.

It seems that Canada is being left behind on this front, largely as a result of its outdated policies regarding sports betting. In fact, there have been claims among politicians and union leaders, that Canada’s sports betting laws are ‘mind-boggling,’ and need to be changed. A push is being made to legalise single-game sports betting as soon as possible. David Cassidy, who is president of Unifor Local 444 claimed, “We’re going to be doing lobbying efforts. It’s going to be front and centre because we have a lot of members in the hospitality sector that it negatively affects.”

Cassidy does seem to have a point, and Canada’s current ban on sports betting feels a little like cutting off its nose to spite its face. Union leaders are spearheading the movement to try to expand sports betting in the area, and this is something that plays a big part in the process of developing and expanding the industry in the best possible way.

Well, the good news is that it does seem as though steps have been taken in the right direction. Indeed, just last month news broke that Canada’s National Hockey League entered into a partnership with MGM Casinos in a bid to promote sports betting. It seems clear that this is going to open the door to new ideas and developments, and there are going to be a lot more conversations now about legalising sports betting in Canada as a result. This is why it is so important for developments like this to occur, and have a good impact on the future of the industry.

The hope is that this is something that will encourage MPs to tackle the sports betting issue once again, and look at ways in which it can be introduced into the country. This is going to have major long-term benefits for the country and the gambling industry as a whole.
