Century Mile Pushes Gambling Amenities

The beginning of April saw a landmark event for the city of Edmonton with the opening of the long-awaited Century Mile Racetrack and Casino. After a couple of years of planning and development, the complex was finally opened just in time for the new racing season. This is a move that is thought to be promising for the economy of Edmonton, and will bring in a lot of money in the future.

However, the racetrack is refusing to rest on its laurels, and those in positions of power understand the changes that will need to happen in order to achieve success. It is clear that the casino side of the business is where the money is going to lie, and the complex has quite rightly focused on this. The announcement came this week that Century Mile will be doubling down on gambling amenities in order to keep up with the times.

It should be noted that this $61 million project is intended to take horse racing mainstream, and really catapult it into the spotlight for a whole new demographic of people. Indeed, Century Mile, above all else, considers itself a racetrack with a casino, and not the other way around. The racetrack has been there since the start and remains perhaps the biggest reason for people to visit. In fact, last year, the location played host to Canada’s hugely popular Chuckwagon championship finals

So it is clear that the company and the industry wants to keep the horse racing element of Century Mile in the forefront. However, with the industry the way that it is, there is a lot to think about in terms of making more money and generating as much revenue as possible. So, the facility is pushing those amenities that are focused on gambling in order to keep a steady stream of punters ticking over.

The fact that the racetrack and casino opened to the public very recently, and the fact that it is  located really close to the airport suggests that there is a focus on attracting out of towners as well as locals, and this is why the casino is just as important as the racetrack, if not more so. Covering 103 acres, with more than 1,500 parking spots, this is a complex designed for success, and Edmonton natives will be hoping it draws the crowds as much as possible.

How much of a success the racetrack and casino will prove remains to be seen, but one thing is clear – it is going to have a massive impact on the gambling industry in Alberta. Horse racing is one of the most popular betting events available in Canada, largely because the country is yet to embrace full-scale sports betting.
