Could Plans be Approved for North Bay Casino at Pinewood Park?

There seems to be new casino developments popping up in provinces all across the country. This is a growth market in Canada, and people are very much making the most of it. Gateway Casinos and Entertainment is one of the leading casino companies in Canada, and it seems that these guys have their fingers in a lot of pies these days.

Indeed, Gateway has spearheaded a lot of projects in recent times, in its bid to expand its reach across more parts of Canada. We saw this with their $57 million development project back in September of this year. And now it seems like Gateway could be at the forefront of another major development in B.C., specifically, in Ontario’s North Bay.

Back in 2012, the city council at North Bay carried out a vote to allow for a casino to be built on the surrounding land at some point in the future. But, there was also a clause inserted that allowed the city to reject any planned casino proposal in the future, of they felt is wasn’t in the best interests of the city. Gateway then announced last year that it was looking at a development site for a possible casino in North Bay.

Now news is coming out that the city is happy to proceed, and has approved plans for the development of a $31 million casino project. It is pretty clear that this is a project that could well have massively positive impacts for North Bay, and the surrounding area. Any time a new casino is built, this can bring a lot of opportunities to the city and create more jobs as well. Indeed, it is thought that this is a project that is going to create more than 200 new jobs when it opens in 2020.

Creating new jobs and bringing more money into the city is so important, and a new casino would certainly bring a lot of positives to the city as a whole. In spite of this, city councillor Mark King wants to delay the development a little further to deal with the social costs, and make sure everything falls into place as smoothly as possible. He was quoted as saying, “They’re having a tough time following this and getting a handle on what it means for the city. I would think that rushing this through is not the way to go about it.”

The development is also a massive positive for Gateway, who have been dogged by strike action over the past year. They will doubtless be looking to get things back up and running again, and be able to increase and expand their empire once again. However, the support for this North Bay casino development has not been all positive, with some opposed to it, citing the issues of problem gambling and money laundering that have plagued other parts of the country.

It could well be the case that we see a reversal from the city, if worst comes to worst. But, this is something that will require a lot of debate and forethought, and it is something that will need to be sorted out as soon as possible.
