Google Play Will Now Offer Betting Apps
The change reverses a 2013 decision to remove all gambling apps from the Google Android store
Google is set to remove its ban on online betting apps next month. The move comes as a welcome surprise, given the well known and notoriously strict anti-betting stance the company has had to this point.
The change reverses a 2013 decision to remove all gambling apps from the Google Play Android store. Although the move won’t currently affect the Canadian market, the potential reverberations nevertheless make it a good day for online casino enthusiasts worldwide who would like to enjoy their favorite games from wherever they have their Android smartphone:
A Harbinger of Things to Come?
For now, the change will only be put in place for the UK, France, and Ireland. An email obtained by Andrew Daniels of Degree53 states the following:
“Google will accept applications for the distribution of gambling apps within the Play store in the United Kingdom, France and the Republic of Ireland” with the possibility of “further expansion of the policy change…to new regions and countries.”
At face value this might seem like disappointing news for Canadians. However, Canucks who look a little bit deeper will take heart from two additional observations. For starters, there’s the fact that this policy shift away from an absolute ban indicates whatever reason Google had for banning online betting apps is no longer relevant.
Secondly, that means the door is open to expanded the policy to additional markets in the future – such as Canada – a possibility we can already see being hinted at in Google’s corporate communications.
A Welcome Change
Given the frustrating and unreliable workarounds online gambling developers had gone to in recent years to try and get Android apps to players, the news is being welcome by all corners of the online gambling community.
It remains to be seen how the rollout will go. However, given how popular online betting is in the UK especially, the safe money is on it being a huge success. Hopefully, it won’t be long until the same can be said in the Canadian market as well.
