Long Awaited Century Mile Finally Opens to Public

“The first horse races took place in Alberta in the 1880s, and we’ve had a proud racing history in and around the city of Edmonton for the past 118 years.”

Earlier this week saw big developments in the Canadian casino industry finally coming to fruition, as the long-awaited Century Mile Racetrack and Casino finally opened its doors to the public. The one-mile horse racing track is a welcome addition to the area, and looks set to offer plenty of excellent benefits for the area. Furthermore, it is one of those casinos that combines itself with other things, in this case horse racing.

Now, there is no question that the racetrack element will be a big draw here, and it is certain that customers are going to flock here. We know that Canada is yet to fully embrace single sports betting. In fact, the country’s refusal to fully embrace sports betting is actually costing it millions. But the racetrack is one of the few places where punters can wager on the outcome of a race. This is one of the big factors that is making this a really appealing venture for so many natives.

This is not the first instance of Century Downs playing host to a seminal event, and using the racetrack at Century Mile for competitive racing. Indeed, last year the racetrack played host to the iconic chuckwagon finals, and this could be considered a trial run for the future of the racetrack and casino. Now that it is open fully, we can expect to see a lot more racing events in the future, and this is going to do wonders for the local economy.

Edmonton residents can feel great about welcoming this stunning C$65.1 million complex to Alberta, and we could well see the area flourish and thrive as a result. Back in 2015, the racing industry generated C$300 million for the province of Alberta, and with the addition of Century Mile, this is a figure that is sure to greatly increase.

It’s not only the economic benefits that appeal to the city, and its residents, but it’s also the tradition. The area has deep roots in the racing industry, with Kent Verlik, CEO of Horse Racing Alberta, backing the development, saying “The first horse races took place in Alberta in the 1880s, and we’ve had a proud racing history in and around the city of Edmonton for the past 118 years.”

The casino and racing complex boasts just shy of 90,000 square feet of space, with more than 500 slot machines and table games, 14 VLTs, and a bar & restaurant, and that’s just on the ground floor! The second and third floors offer private suites, seating, betting areas, and of course more bar areas. Century Mile racetrack has opened with the new season just 4 weeks away, and could well be a shot in the arm for the industry moving forward.
