NHL Joins with MGM for Slice of Sports Betting Market

Every now and again the casino industry in Canada sees a massive development take it forward. Whether it be a project, a partnership, or the unveiling of a new slot game, it is clear that there are changes that take the industry forward into bigger and better things. Important developments, such as Gateway Casinos announcing Wasaga Beach as the venue for expanding their empire, are always influential.

It’s clear that, in addition to the world of land-based and online casino gaming, sports betting also plays a big part in the Canadian gambling industry. One of the biggest developments in the industry of late has got to be the partnership between MGM and the National Hockey League. The NHL has announced a multi-year deal with MGM Resorts International, making them the second sports to strike a deal of this ilk, after the NBA.

NHL-MGM

There are a lot of things that play a part in this, and it will have major repercussions for sports betting across the country. As a part of the agreement, MGM is given access to data that will allow them to modify their output, and customise gaming experiences. This is a move that is sure to revolutionise sports betting in the future, and could see the whole of North America respond positively.

The move sees MGM have access to the intellectual property of the NHL, as well as player tracking systems. It is hoped that the move will bring a more customer-centric experience to sports betting. This could open up a lot more betting markets, and bring customers closer to the game in the process as well.

MGM Chairman and CEO Jim Murren opined, “The more data a bettor has, the better. That data has to be trusted. It has to be specific. It has to be endorsed. It has to be real-time.” There is no doubt that this is a partnership that is going to tick all of these boxes, and is likely to bring things much closer for customers. Indeed, the move comes following legislation in the summer that legalised sports betting in the United States.

It is questionable whether fans are going to see much of a change, at least directly, to the way the increase in hockey-related gambling grows. However, there are a lot of benefits for the league, and teams in the league, especially as they will benefit from what is known as Hockey Related Revenue. It probably won’t be too long before other sports begin to follow suit and benefit from the increased interest and revenue sports betting provides.

Now, there are of course issues that could arise with things like illegal betting, match-fixing, and other worries. But this is a road that all professional sporting bodies have been down before, and will be again. And it is all about the way they deal with these things. For the most part, it seems as though the NHL entering a sports betting partnership is going to be a fruitful venture for all concerned.
