This Week in Canada:  Manitoba’s Premier to Ban Smoking in All Gambling Establishments

Indoor smoking in public places and workplaces have been banned in Canada since more than a decade ago. However, certain First Nations gaming facilities like casinos, bingo halls, and VLT establishments still allow smoking within the premises. But this might all change very soon in Manitoba. Brian Pallister, Manitoba’s premier, has announced that when gambling facilities re-open (they are now closed due to the pandemic), smoking will no longer be permitted. Perhaps Palliser has jumped the gun here because this piece of news has made some First Nations chiefs very upset and they are not going to make it easy for the premier to carry out his anti-smoking plans. Perhaps people just really want the right to lose money and lose their health too, without the government telling them that they can’t do it.

This Week in the Rest of the World: UKGC Launched Investigation After Gambling Addict Took Own Life

A 25-year-old gambling addict in the UK ended his own life after losing more than £30,000 via the sites owned by PT Entertainment Services (PTES). Subsequently, the deceased’s family contacted the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) who then launched an investigation into this.  However, before the investigation concluded, PTES has surrendered its operating licence and closed down the company, avoiding any possible fine issued by the UKGC. Despite this, the commission had gone ahead with the investigation and published their findings anyway, to serve as a lesson learned for other operators. PTES was found to have failed at carrying out responsible gambling checks and would have been fined at least £3.5 million.  Playtech, the parent company of PTES, has pledged to donate £5 million to gambling harm related charities in the next 5 years – but is this too little, too late?
