Ontario Urges Government to Back Single Sports Betting

Sports betting is such a lucrative area in the world of online gambling, and this is something you need to explore as best you can. There are so many great benefits to embracing online sports betting, but Canada still appears to be lagging behind in this respect. Last year, America’s Supreme Court passed legislation to legalise sports betting in every state, in an historic move that will transform the gambling industry Stateside.

Unfortunately, Canada has not followed suit, and we seem to have a long way to go before we can match the US in terms of sports betting. This is despite the fact that the National Hockey League, Canada’s most popular sports league, has entered the sports betting market, albeit across the border. It is essential that Canada gets on board with single sports betting sooner rather than later, or the country could continue to make losses.

Ontario Sports Betting

This has led to calls from Canadian provinces such as Ontario, for the government to legalise sports betting in Canada. Indeed, Vic Fideli, Ontario’s finance minister, is pushing for the government to legalise sports betting across Canada. Currently Ontario residents can bet on sports, but they have to bet on a minimum of three games at once, and they have to get all three right in order to win. Fideli expressed concern that Canadian’s might look to the US, or illegal channels, in order to fulfil their sports betting fix, and this would not benefit Canada’s economy. In a letter to the federal finance minister he wrote, “Canadian consumer spending on U.S. casino or illegal internet sports betting provides no return or value to provincial governments or gaming operators.”

There is no doubt that single event wagering is one of the fastest growing categories in the world of gambling, and this is something that many in Canada would actively favour. Ontario has been vocal about urging feds to legalise single event sports betting, but they certainly aren’t the only province who would find this an agreeable move.

The good news for Fideli, and all those supporting this venture, is that there seems to be support from the professional leagues as well. In fact, Randy Ambrosie, the commissioner of the Canadian Football League (CFL) strongly supports the idea of expanding gambling legislation to include sports betting for Canadians.

There is a hope among many that this may lead to some changes in gambling legislation across the country over the next few years. If the Canadian government thaws its approach to single sports betting, this could well lead to a huge economic boom for Canada, and a sector that is highly popular and lucrative.
