Questions Remain of MP Grewal as Fundraiser Details Leaked
There are so many different aspects of the casino landscape in Canada, and it is clear that every week the tide is turning. Casino gambling in Canada remains hugely popular, and this has led to improved facilities, developments, and more choice for punters. Indeed, high-profile Canadian casino heavyweights Gateway started the year in style with another acquisition. However, in spite of the positive aspects of the Canadian casino world, there are also darker and more nefarious sides to it, and these are not going away any time soon. In fact, it seems we can’t go a week these days without some sort of revelation related to money laundering or problem gambling. This is something that is certainly threatening to undo much of the hard work that authorities and casino companies have spent years trying to build. One of the biggest dramas in the Canadian gambling world in recent times has been the sheer scale of money laundering that has been happening across provinces, especially in British Columbia. This has even led to calls for a public inquiry into the role of money laundering in Canada, and how it has stretched beyond our casinos. And now we have had further developments in the case of former-Liberal MP Raj Grewal. Grewal made headlines last year when it was revealed that he had been suffering from a pretty severe gambling addiction. After announcing his resignation, Grewal made a U-turn and actually made the decision to stay as a on in his role as an MP, albeit an independent one. This controversial decision was met with criticism by members of the public, as well as opposing political parties. It has raised questions in parliament about just how much the Liberal’s were actually aware of this issue. Well, it seems that Grewal has hit headlines once again, after details of a fundraising event that raised C$600,000 were revealed. The event in question appeared to coincide with a time at which Grewal was drowning in gambling debt, and people have become suspicious. After clearing his debts, Grewal claimed friends and family members had loaned him the money, but now people are not so sure. And the Liberal party has not helped matters by refusing to reveal details of the fundraiser, casting further doubt on things. It could well be the case that this money was used by Grewal to clear his debts, and it could well be that many involved with the party knew of this problem. It might even be the case that there were links to money laundering as well! New Democrat MP Nathan Cullen blasted the move, saying “For a government that said it would be transparent by default, this is proving that not to be true.” It seems like this is a case that is going to rage on, and there are a lot of things that could yet be revealed. Let’s just hope the government gets the right handle on events, and deals with this as effectively as possible.
