Staff Approve New Casino Rama Contracts

For the past year or so, provinces across Canada have had to deal with union-led strike action from employees of their casinos. This is something that has led to a lot of friction between casino providers, most notably Gateway Casinos, and employee unions such as Unifor Local. There are a lot of different issues that have combined here, and it is never a simple process.

Gateway Casinos and Entertainment has been at the heart of a lot of disgruntled employee action over the past year, with many believing they are not receiving the contracts they should be. In fact, this is not the only instance of strike action that Gateway has faced. Back in November we heard details of four Okanagan casinos in British Columbia that had to temporarily close due to strike action from workers.

This might not seem like the best course of action, but it is something that has yielded a lot of benefits in the end. And, in the case of Casino Rama, a whopping 94% of workers voted in favour of strike action against the casino. This led to a stand-off that dragged on for months as Unifor entered into negotiations with Gateway. There were several false dawns, and a few instances in which it seemed that strike action might go on forever.

And casino workers at Rama seem to have finally reached an agreement with Gateway Casinos, as it was revealed this week that the two parties have agreed a new three-year contract. This will see workers secure a 10% pay rise, in addition to other benefits, over the next three years. The move could set a precedent for other casinos, unions, and workforces across Canada over the next year or so. More workers unions could use for renegotiations of contracts, and this could lead to further strikes as a result.

The new pact, agreed with Gateway, seems to have been some kind of success, and it was favoured by 72% of Casino Rama employees. While there are always going to be cases in which some workers are never going to be happy, it seems that the majority were satisfied with the agreement, and keen to get back to work under the terms of their new contract. This is going to be good news for both sides, as it is a solution that both seem to be okay with, and it gets casino operations up and running once again.

Strike action could well derail casino operations across the country, but it has been shown to have positive effects in regards to negotiating. These new three-year contracts are bound to have a positive result for the future, and help the staff of Casino Rama to get a fairer and more positive compensation for their efforts.
