UK Gambling Commission Threatens To Revoke Licenses
The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC), the regulatory body charged with protecting online casino players that use any of the sites licensed to operate from within the UK, has announced it is looking at the possibility of revoking as many as five licenses due to accusations of money laundering and ties to organized crime.
Last year saw the UKGC hand down one of the largest fines in history to 888 — one of the best online poker rooms in Canada — over violations of rules regarding problem gambling.
“It is vital that the gambling industry takes its duty to protect consumers and keep crime out of gambling seriously,” said UKGC CEO Sarah Harrison in remarks about the move.
Player Protections Critical
Because so many of the world’s largest online casino brands operate out of the UK, the work of the UKGC in protecting players is seen as a critical component of overall online casino gaming’s health.
In Canada alone, a large number of players frequent leading UKGC approved sites such as 888 and Betway Casino. That trust is shared with fellow players in many other countries. Taken together, it makes for such a heavy responsibility that even UK legislators themselves keep a watchful eye on the the UKGC’s work.
For that reason, Tom Watson, a member of the UK’s Labour Party, highlighted the support lawmakers are giving the UKGC in it mission to protect players:
“The Gambling Commission is right to demand immediate improvement. No firm that fails to take its responsibilities seriously should be allowed to hold a licence,” he said in remarks about the ongoing investigation.
A Comprehensive Vision
The announcement of an investigation comes on the heels of a recent revamp by the UKGC to its core mission. Searching for a way towards a “fairer and safer gambling market,” its work has been much more aggressive in asserting compliance from operators in recent months.
While it still remains to be seen what the outcome of this investigation will be, players can rest assured that regulators are looking out for them.
Ultimately, it’s precisely because the UKGC is known for using all of the resources put at its disposal to protect players that Canadians trust sites like 888 and Betway Casino so completely.
